I was recently asked to write an article on POPSUGAR Fitness about whether or not it is normal for periods to change with age.

The question that I sought to answer was:

As I get older, is it normal for my periods to get longer or heavier or should they get lighter or more regular? How do I know if there is a problem?

I talked about some of the reasons that a person could experience menstrual cycle changes, and how to recognize those changes. I also talked about what the range of normal really is, because it isn’t just 28 day cycles.

It’s important then that you tell your ob-gyn about any changes. The solution may be as simple as switching birth controls or taking steps to improve your lifestyle — for example, a series of studies suggest that regular exercise can improve pregnancy rates, so it’s likely that it makes periods more regular, too — but only your doctor can determine the best treatment plan for you.
